Palpable fear gripped residents of Ugwuaji Area of Enugu State as dead bodies were discovered under the foundation of a popular church along the Enugu Port-Harcourt Express Road.
The graphic photos of the victims which emerged in the evening of Monday, January 25, 2016 left a handful of persons in tears.
Daily Post reports that the corpses were buried inside the foundation of the building suspected to be a church under construction and totally covered with concrete.
The owner of the building who was not immediately identified was said to have started the construction just recently before the discovery was made.
According to unconfirmed sources, the police mobilized some officers to the scene following a tip off from one of the construction workers.
The foundation was dug open by some hired labourers who discovered the corpses.
Some residents of the neighbourhood alleged that the building believed to be a proposed place of worship, belonged to a ritualist who disguised to be a man of God.
When contacted, the state Police spokesman, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the report.
He said: “On information, three decomposing bodies were discovered and full scale investigations have commenced with a view to unmasking circumstances surrounding the incident.”
Security operatives were said to have swung into action to uncover the ritualist ‘pastor’ and his cohorts who killed and buried the deceased persons.
An eyewitness described the incident as “wicked and the most inhuman action I have seen in my entire life.”
He said: “I was traveling when I saw the crowd there and had to stop. This is wickedness of the highest order. Accusing fingers are being pointed at a particular new church along that road; I don’t know who did this; but I must say that the wicked will never go unpunished.
“People no longer value human lives; for whatever purpose this was done, it is heart breaking.”
