Crackdown Continues: Kano’s Deputy Governor Vows to Keep Pulling Down Illegal Structures

KANO, Nigeria – Aminu Gwarzo, the Deputy Governor of Kano State, has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to continuing the demolition of illegal structures, an initiative launched by the previous administration under Abdullahi Ganduje.

During a meeting with members of the Association of Progressive Tarauni LGA at the Government House on Thursday, June 8, 2023, the Deputy Governor stressed the importance of maintaining the rule of law and reinstating order in urban environments.

He argued that these demolitions are necessary for sustainable urban development and to protect the public interest.

Abdussalam expressed his concerns over the negative effects that unregulated structures have on infrastructure, drainage systems, and public safety.

“Public assets were sold by the previous administration for personal gain, without considering the consequences on the community,” he said, referring to the division and sale of lands within the historic Massalacin Waje at Fagge LGA and portions of the Eid prayer ground.

He questioned the silence of those who now oppose the demolitions, including religious leaders, when the previous governor was selling public assets to his relatives and close associates.

The Deputy Governor also expressed his disapproval of the sale of portions of graveyards for the construction of shops, and the division and sale of facilities within the Hajj camp, which is supposed to serve as an exercise ground for pilgrims.

He assured that the current Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, is taking steps to restore and equip the camp.

Abdussalam also cited other public assets allegedly sold by the previous administration, including the New Kano Government House at Kwankwasiyya City, equipment at Triumph, lands surrounding Yusuf Maitama Sule University and Dansoshiya Forest, and large farmlands across various local government areas.

Abdussalam assured the public that the government will handle affected individuals and interest groups fairly and sensitively.

He stated that a thorough assessment and verification process has been put in place to determine the legality of structures before their demolition.

The Deputy Governor called for residents’ cooperation with the government and compliance with guidelines and regulations set by relevant authorities.
