Another nurse who tended to Liberian Patrick Sawyer, the Ebola patient who brought the virus to Nigeria has died after contracting the virus.
The nurse, Justina Ejelonu Obi, a 25-year old, is said to have died as a result of the Ebola virus.
The Trent received news of her death from the Abia State government on the morning of Thursday. She died in a quarantine facility in Lagos.
The Abia State government issued the following statement delivered to newsmen by Nnaji Asiegbu, Special Assistant to Governor Theodore Orji.
My heart bleeds as I write this. On behalf my family, the Government and the good people of Abia State, I commiserate with Family, Friends and Colleagues of our Dear Lady Nurse, Justina Echelonu, who died following the contact she had with the Liberian American, Mr. Patrick Sawyer, in the course of discharging her duty as a nurse.I pray God to give them the fortitude to bear this tragic and irreparable loss. Rest in Peace Ms Justina Echelonu.
The late Ejelonu was said to have been outspoken and was instrumental in the campaign for the experimental drug ZMapp to be transported to Nigeria. A campaign spearheaded by John Okiyi-Kalu on the internet a few days ago.
Ejelonu was one of the primary contacts with Patrick Sawyer in the private hospital in Lagos he was rushed to after he collapsed at the Murtala Muhammed Airport on arrival in Lagos.
