The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, has disclosed that the Police has put modalities in place towards ensuring lasting peace between Fulani herdsmen and Agatu people in Benue and Nasarawa states, Leadership reports.
Arase stated this yesterday in Lafia in continuation of his nationwide tour of Police formations aimed at repositioning the force for better service delivery.
The IGP who said the constant blood-letting between farmers and Fulani herdsmen was worrisome, stressed that a more holistic approach was being adopted by the Police to put a final end to the recurring menace.
Addressing newsmen after a courtesy call on Governor Umaru Tanko Almakura, the Police boss said the force is set to unveil a special welfare package for widows whose spouses were killed by the Ombatse militia in 2013.
He also disclosed that as part of its welfare initiatives for its officers and men, the Police will construct houses for its retiring officers with a biase for Inspectors and rank and file officers.
IGP Arase who attributed corruption in the force to poor welfare packages and ‘fear of the unknown’ said service delivery to members of the public by the force has gone digital and urged members of the public to give the Police the necessary support in the discharge of their duties of protecting lives and property.
Earlier in his remarks, Governor Almakura expressed concern over the incessant clashes between farmers and herders, assuring Benue and Nasarawa governments are working round the clock to ensure lasting peace returned.
Following the IGP’s request, Governor Almakura directed the state commissioner for Lands and Survey, Mr. Sunny Agassi, to map out a plot of land for the construction of houses for retiring police officers.
Similarly, in an effort to address the constant clash between officers of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies, like the military the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Solomon Arase said the force is planning to organize a joint forum to strengthen mutual understanding between the officers, especially the junior officers.
He said “such forum will provide us a common ground to build our relationship and to understand our functions better.”
The IGP who noted that the relationship between the senior officers is cordial, said there are still some understandable areas of difference between the junior officers that need to be address.
He said while they have the same broad objectives with regard to achieving a secure, society a harmonious relationship will help them achieve the goal effectively.
