Girl, 15, Arrested At Airport Escaping To Join ISIS

A female teenager of South African origin was on Sunday, April 5, 2015 pulled out from a flight her bid to escape the country and join the Islamic State jihadists under the aegis of ISIS.

The State Security Minister, David Mahlobo who made the disclosure on Monday, April 6, 2015 said the 15-year-old girl was detained at Cape Town airport in South Africa after evidence was found in her bedroom indicating she had been in contact with Islamic State recruiters.

According to New Telegraph, the ministry is currently investigating whether Islamic State had a recruitment network in South Africa.

Mahlobo said, “We can confirm that she was planning to leave the country with the intention of joining IS and had been actively engaged with social media networks.

“An investigation is under way as to how far this network goes, whether there is a cell in the country. We cannot allow South Africa to be used as recruitment space.”

It has been alleged that the girl was set to go to Turkey from where she would allegedly cross the border into Syria.

Meanwhile, the unidentified girl was handed down to her family after she was interrogated by security operatives.
