The police in Kano State have summoned Mallam Sagir Takai, the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate,over the alleged murder of a 70-year-old man.
Backstory
According to the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Magaji Majiya, the police have commenced an investigation into the alleged case of homicide which allegedly involves the PDP candidate and some of his supporters.
“On Saturday, Takai and his supporters were traveling in a convoy when they arrived Ahmadu Bello Way roundabout. Someone in the convoy wielding a long knife descended on the 70-year-old passer-by and stabbed him on the head, inflicting grievous hurt on the man,’’ Majiya said.
The police are expected to question Takai on Monday, October 15, 2018, about his role in the murder and also why his supporters were wielding dangerous weapons.
Majiya mentioned that despite the presence of police escort accompanying the candidate’s convoy, Takai’s supporters were found to be in possession of dangerous weapons.
He said, “To our surprise, despite the policemen assigned to the entourage of the PDP candidate, we discovered that among them were persons that were armed with dangerous weapons which they continued to display flagrantly until the unfortunate incident occurred at Ahmadu Bello Way roundabout.”

Kano is one of the most important states for the next general elections. With the highest voting population in the nation and two strong men backing the two main parties, it is expected to be a fierce battle for votes.
A homicide case against the PDP candidate so close to the election will do his campaign no good. But it is crucial that the police do a proper and impartial investigation of the alleged death.
Gov. Ganduje himself is currently going through a scandal of his own. A video shared last weekend shows the governors accepting several wads of dollar notes allegedly as bribes. The government of Kano has denied the accusations, claiming that the video was doctored.
