A 2-year-old boy born with three penises and no anus had undergone a surgery to remove two and leave him with just one organ.
The lad suffers a rare medical condition referred to as diphallia where a male is born with two penises although he had a third penis considered rudimentary, or undeveloped.
The 6-hour long surgery was carried out on the boy whose identity was undisclosed at Son Hospital in Mumbai in July 2015 leaving the family with an optimism that t would turn out positive.
After the pioneering surgery, the toddler from Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh, India, was able to pass urine through one of the penises. Only two had erectile tissue, which is responsible for sexual function, Mirror UK reports.
Dr Vishesh Dixit, paediatric surgeon, said: “There was a huge soft boney mass and tissue to which the penises were attached. However, the anus was absent.
“The two functional penises were fused into one by wrapping a mass of skin around them.
“Further, an anal path was created through the boy’s rectum to facilitate the passage of excreta.”
According to the doctors, the boy’s sexual function will be normal and his fertility will not be affected when he attains adulthood.
Expressing gratitude, the boy’s uncles said: “We want our boy to lead a normal life, and are grateful to the doctors who have conducted a successful surgery.”
