Nigerian Military Arrest Man With Unregistered Car In Nyanya

Must read

Apparently still trying desperately to unravel the forces behind penultimate Monday’s bomb blast at the busy Nyanya bus terminal which claimed no fewer than 100 lives, the authorities of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, has declared war on abandoned vehicles and their owners.

As a first step, the task force, swooped on Asokoro District of Abuja, where the Presidential Villa is situated and arrested a man, who had parked his unregistered Jetta saloon car near an embassy located on Jose Marti Crescent, Asokoro.

Apart from arresting the man, whose name could not be immediately ascertained, the combined team of soldiers and anti-terrorism police officers, towed the suspected vehicle to an undisclosed destination in the FCT.

This came as most of the victims of the blast are still under medical watch, it was learnt, yesterday.

It had set up a multi-security task force to rid the capital and its environs of all abandoned vehicles within its area of jurisdiction.

The task force, which comprised the Army, Police, Road Safety, Civil Defence and the Department of State Service, DSS, also had members of the Bomb Disposal Unit.

Findings by Vanguard revealed that the task force was also out to deal with owners of unregistered vehicles as well as those who park their vehicles near private and public places and disappear.

A soldier, who conducted the operation, simply motioned to our correspondent to move away from the scene of the incident as he was not prepared to speak on what they were doing.

Both the suspect and his vehicle were taken away by the soldiers with the help of a hired private towing van which incidentally did not have a number plate.

Nearby, on the busy AYA Junction, a few metres from ECOWAS Building, the FCT task force clamped down on commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators, who provide last line transport support to residents of the high-brow residential area of the FCT.

The arrested cyclists were immediately hauled into waiting trucks provided by the FCT and taken to unknown locations.

None of the task force officials was willing to talk to Vanguard despite several attempts.

But the clampdown on the cyclists had already caused a serious transportation crisis in the FCT as many commuters from Nyanya axis now find it extremely difficult to get a means of transportation from the area to the state capital and back.
