Nigeria’s Secret Police Arrests Jonathan’s CSO, Denies Him Access To Lawyer

Must read

The Department of State Services (DSS) has continued its clampdown on officials of the past administration as reports have it that Gordon Obua, the Chief Security Officer to former President Goodluck Jonathan has been arrested after he honoured their invitation on Thursday, July 16, 2015.

Although the reason for his arrest was not immediately available, a source told The Cable that it might not be unrelated to the movement of large sums of “security money” under his stewardship.

It was also gathered that Obua had embarked on a hunger strike to protest the conditions of his arrest, which includes lack of access to his lawyers and family members.

Another source said Obua’s prolonged detention was as a result of his lack of cooperation. Unverified reports say that Obua is being kept in an underground cell at the Abuja headquarters of the country’s Secret Police.

One of President Muhammadu Buhari’s first actions in office was to fire the Director General of the DSS, Ita Ekpeyong and replace him with a kinsman from his hometown of Daura in Katsina State, Lawal Musa Daura, who retired from the DSS in 2013.

Obua’s detention is said to be part of a ‘massive investigation’ by the DSS into the security spending during the Goodluck Jonathan administration. Former National Security Advisor under President Jonathan, Sambo Dasuki was arrested from his Asokoro Abuja residence, questioned, and released by the DSS on Friday, July 17, 2015.
