The unfortunate incident happened at Ika in Ejigbo Local Government Area where the Speaker, Najeem Salam, had gone to attend a party on Saturday, March 22, 2014.

The deceased allegedly stayed back at the party after the Speaker had gone to bed and had attempted to intervene in a fight among some thugs, only for their gang to attack him in retaliation.

It was learnt that Olubunmi had called on Idowu to come and help him as he was not in uniform and unarmed.

Idowu, on arriving at the scene, allegedly shot his gun to scare the hoodlums, but the bullet hit Olubunmi, who died on the spot.

The incident has reportedly been confirmed by the media aide to the Speaker, Mr. Goke Butika, who said,

“The deceased was the best friend of the police officer who mistakenly shot him. He actually went to the scene of the crisis with the aim of preventing the crisis from escalating and in an attempt to shoot into the air to scare away the hoodlums, he mistakenly shot his friend.

“The Speaker has received the news of the ugly incident and the police are already investigating the matter.”
