Trump 2.0: ‘Mexico Embraces You’ Programme Launched to Support Citizens Facing Deportation

Must read

MEXICO CITY, Mexico – Mexico’s Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez on Monday, January 20, 2025, unveiled a new initiative called “Mexico Embraces You,” aimed at supporting Mexican citizens who could be deported from the United States under President Donald Trump’s administration.

The program comes in response to Trump’s campaign promises to carry out mass deportations and reflects Mexico’s proactive approach to addressing potential challenges facing its diaspora community in the U.S.

A Plan for Repatriation

Rodríguez, speaking at a press conference, emphasised the Mexican government’s commitment to supporting its citizens who may be forcibly returned.

“Mexico will do everything necessary to defend, care for, and allocate what is needed to receive those who are repatriated in order to achieve their reincorporation to their native country,” Rodríguez said.

Under the initiative, the National Migration Institute (INM) will oversee the reception of repatriated citizens, facilitate their return to their places of origin, and ensure access to essential services.

Immediate Support for Repatriated Citizens

To aid in the transition, the Mexican government will provide each returning citizen with 2,000 Mexican pesos (approximately $100) to cover initial expenses during their journey home.

Additionally, the National Population Registry (RENAPO) will assist returnees in processing identity documents such as birth certificates and voter IDs, ensuring they have the necessary credentials to reintegrate into Mexican society.

Collaborative Efforts

The programme has been developed in partnership with international organizations, including the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

These partnerships aim to provide resources, coordination, and guidance on human rights and reintegration efforts.

Message of Reassurance

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum sought to reassure citizens in the U.S., urging them to remain calm while the government works to address the situation.

She also expressed an intent to engage with Trump’s administration to seek clarity on deportation plans.

“We will continue to advocate for the dignity and rights of our people, no matter where they are,” Sheinbaum said, highlighting her administration’s commitment to protecting Mexican nationals abroad.

Preparing for Mass Deportations

The initiative is a direct response to President Trump’s pledge to implement stricter immigration enforcement, including the potential deportation of millions of undocumented immigrants.

Trump’s administration has cited national security and economic concerns as motivations for the proposed measures.

Rodríguez noted that the program has been under development since Trump’s initial announcements, ensuring Mexico is prepared to handle a potential surge in deportations.

A Humanitarian Effort

The “Mexico Embraces You” initiative underscores Mexico’s dedication to supporting its citizens through a potentially tumultuous period.

As deportations loom, the programme aims to provide stability, resources, and a sense of dignity for those returning to their homeland.
