A woman was on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 sentenced to 40 years imprisonment after she pleaded guilty of killing her 17-month old child, Lucas Ruiz, who has Down syndrome.

22-year-old Erika Wigstrom from Louisana, injected hand sanitizer and perfume into Ruiz’s feeding tube on Friday, January 23, 2015 and he died thereafter.

Asides being born with Down syndrome, the poor boy had holes in the heart, a medical condition needed surgery and a feeding tube.

According to reports, the woman, who had no remorse confessed to the crime, after a post mortem later showed the toddler’s blood-alcohol content was 0.28 per cent and the police called her in for questioning upon receiving the report.

During her appearance in court, Wigstrom claimed that she did her son a favour by killing him in what she described as ‘mercy killing’ but the prosecutors blasted her and alleged that she made a similar attempt to take her child’s life few months after he was born.
