Safeguarding life and property during festive period does not seem to be part of the job prescription of the Police Force in the Italian capital, Rome as up to 83% of policemen in the city reportedly called in “sick” on Wednesday, December 31, 2014, Metro UK reports.

The actions of the officers has been widely condemned with Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and Mayor of Rome, Ignazio Marino lampooning the mass absence as a shame to the force, although the officers have previously clamoured for better pay and complained of being understaffed.

Prime Minister Renzi said: ‘I read about 83 brigades of 100 to Rome who do not work “sick” on the 31st Dec. That’s why in 2015 we change the civil service rules.’

Mayor Marino on his part said: ‘Who has faked being sick, who invented apology I will have to make act in ways under the law and take responsibility.’
