Three women were arrested and given some hot strokes of cane publicly for indulging in pre-marital sex.
The incident happened at Banda Aceh district of Indonesia.
The women were earlier arrested and were later joined by 14 men who were arrested for sexual offences and gambling.
The seventeen offenders were flogged publicly in front of a mosque after prayers on a fateful Friday.
It was learnt that the offenders were punished in such a manner as part of effort by the central government in Jakarta to curb a long-running separatist insurgency
In Aceh, people caught engaging in gay sex, gambling and drinking alcohol are punished by flogging.
The district started implementing Sharia law after they were granted special autonomy in 2001.
