A 72-year-old grandfather has been arrested by the operatives of the Edo State Police Command for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl.
The man, Mr. Solomon Ugiagbe, was arraigned before an Egor Magistrate’s Court, Benin city on one count charge.
Ugiagbe committed the offence on Thursday, November 13, 2014 and t was later reported at the State Criminal Investigation Department.
The offence, according to the police prosecutor, contravened Section 218 of the Criminal Code, Cap 48, Vol. II, Law of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976, as applicable in Edo State.
The charge read, “That you, Solomon Ugiagbe, on November 13, 2014, on Okungbowa Street, Evbuotubu, Benin City, in the Egor Magisterial District, did unlawfully have carnal knowledge of one (name withheld) aged 11 years by inserting your penis into her vaginal and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 218 of the Criminal Code, Cap 48 Vol. II, Law of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976, as applicable in Edo State.”
After the charge was read to him, he pleaded not guilty and the presiding magistrate, William Aziegbemhin, granted him bail in the sum of N500,000.
The case was adjourned for further mention until Monday, October 5, 2015.
