While Nigeria’s President, General Muhammadu Buhari was in London for the anti-corruption summit last week, the Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) staged a protest and vigil for Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky in the city.
The aim of the protest was to call attention to the Nigerian Army attack on the Shi’ite community in Zaria in which over 350 Shiite Muslims were confirmed killed by the Kaduna State government and the abuse and unlawful detention of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky, the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN).
Between December 12 and 14, 2016, Nigerian soldiers under the cover of an alleged assassination attempt on the army chief, Lieutenant General Yusuf Buratai, invaded the Shi’ite compounds and murdered over 800 Shi’ites according to the sect. The leader of the sect, Sheikh Zakzaky remains in detention since the night he was shot and dragged out of his home like an animal.
The Nigerian government continues to detain Zakzaky illegally even as there are reports that he has gone blind in detention.
Some of the protest’s images which include a banner calling General Buratai the “Butcher of Zaria” and another banner with the words, “Women raped by Army. Why Buhari?”
“President Buhari and top military leaders have not taken meaningful legal action connected to the Zaria massacre to date, which has sparked outrage among the Muslim and non-Muslim communities around the world,” AhlulBayt News Agency reports.
“The Kaduna State government established an apparent judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the incident, but thus far, no concrete steps have been taken to hold the perpetrators of the massacre accountable.
“IHRC is hoping that its protest will pressure the Buhari administration and Nigerian military to thoroughly investigate the matter and bring justice to the families of the victims,” the news agency said.
