Must read

NEW YORK, United States — Clive Davis, the record executive whose ear for talent helped shape generations of popular music, from Whitney Houston to Bruce Springsteen to Janis Joplin, has died, his family said.

Davis died on Monday, June 22, 2026, at the age of 94.

“To the world, our father was the iconic music legend whose vision, instincts, and relentless pursuit of excellence shaped the soundtrack of countless lives,” his family said in a statement.

“He discovered, mentored, and championed the greatest artists in modern music history, leaving an indelible mark on culture that will endure for generations.”

Davis held senior roles at two of the most important record companies in American music. He served as president of Columbia Records and later founded Arista Records, building a reputation as one of the industry’s most powerful tastemakers.

Over several decades, Davis worked with or helped guide the careers of some of the biggest names in popular music, including Whitney Houston, Neil Diamond, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin and Kelly Clarkson.

A Career Built on Identifying Stars

Davis did not begin his professional life in music. Born in Brooklyn, he studied law, graduated from Harvard Law School and worked as a lawyer before joining Columbia Records in 1960.

By 1965, he had become the label’s top lawyer. He was later named president of Columbia, a role that placed him at the centre of a changing American music industry.

“I was thrust into it,” Davis told CNN in 2013.

“Never knowing I had a natural ear and gift for music that,” he said, “would become the passion of my life.”

One of his earliest major discoveries was Janis Joplin, whom he saw perform at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967.

He later wrote in his memoir, “The Soundtrack of My Life,” that Joplin was “not conventionally beautiful,” but “her body seemed to vibrate with the modulations of her voice, which struck with equal impact whether she was wailing at the top of her lungs or delivering an intimate whisper.”

His signings and associations grew to include Bruce Springsteen, Carlos Santana, Chicago, Earth, Wind and Fire, Aerosmith, Barry Manilow and Billy Joel.

Davis signed Joel in 1973, and “Piano Man,” Joel’s first album at Columbia, helped establish him as a major recording artist.

A Grammy-Winning Executive

Davis won four Grammy Awards during his career.

In 2000, he won best rock album and album of the year for Santana’s “Supernatural.”

He later won best pop vocal album for Clarkson’s “Breakaway” in 2006 and best R&B album for Jennifer Hudson’s self-titled album in 2009.

Beyond the boardroom and recording studio, Davis became a fixture of the music industry’s social calendar.

His annual pre-Grammy party drew major figures from music, entertainment and public life.

At his most recent pre-Grammy event, held on January 31 at the Beverly Hilton, guests and performers included Art Garfunkel, Joni Mitchell, Berry Gordy, Brandi Carlile, Pharrell Williams, Dave Grohl, Gladys Knight, Lana Del Rey, Shaboozey, Jack Antonoff and Hudson.

The event also included a video message from former President Barack Obama, who said, “Clive’s talent has always been seeing and hearing what other people don’t.”

Remembered by His Family

Davis’s family said his public achievements did not eclipse his private role as a father and grandfather.

“To his family, Clive was Dad and Granddaddy, the steady presence at the center of our lives, the source of wisdom, strength, encouragement, and unconditional love. No matter how extraordinary his professional accomplishments, he never lost sight of what mattered most: the people he loved,” the family said.

“Through every chapter of his remarkable life, family remained Clive’s greatest pride and deepest joy.

“Today, we celebrate not only a towering figure whose influence changed music forever, but the man who led our family with grace, generosity, and kindness.

We will miss him greatly, cherish him always, and carry his love with us for the rest of our lives.”
