PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria – Mike Okiro, former Inspector General of Police and a candidate for the position of President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has announced his withdrawal from the race following a court order restraining him from contesting.
The interim order, issued by the Enugu State High Court, bars Sir Okiro from participating in the election scheduled for January 10, 2025.
The court cited a suit alleging that Okiro is not from Rivers State, the region to which the position is zoned.
Addressing the Court’s Order
During a press conference in Enugu on Thursday, January 9, 2025, Okiro expressed disappointment with the court’s decision, which he said was made without hearing his side.
“The court order, based on alleged non-indigene status, contradicts verifiable facts,” Okiro said.
“It is unfortunate that the court did not invite me or hear from me before giving that obnoxious order which I got from the media.”
He emphasised his ties to Rivers State, citing numerous records, including his birth attestation from the National Population Commission, statements from his traditional ruler, and past affiliations with Rivers State organisations.
“My records and credentials speak for themselves,” Okiro stated.
Respect for the Rule of Law
Despite contesting the claims, Okiro affirmed his decision to respect the court’s ruling, highlighting his commitment to the rule of law and democratic values.
“My obedience to court orders, no matter how unfavourable, demonstrates our commitment to democracy,” he said.
“I will not participate in any election pending the final determination of the matter.”
Okiro also revealed that his legal team would pursue the case to ensure due process is followed.
Call for Unity
Acknowledging the widespread support he has received from his community and across Igbo states, Okiro urged his supporters to prioritise peace and the rule of law.
“I urge my immediate community Egbema, the entire Igbo-speaking people of Rivers State, and all my supporters across Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, and Delta to stand by the rule of law throughout the period of this contest,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude to Rivers State Governor Siminialayi Fubara for his unwavering support.
A Message of Hope
Despite the setback, Okiro reiterated his dedication to the ideals of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, which he described as a beacon of Igbo unity and progress.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo embodies Igbo unity, progress, and peaceful coexistence,” he said. “Justice shall prevail; Igbo unity and progress remain our guiding principles.”
As the legal process continues, Okiro remains optimistic about the resolution of the case, expressing confidence in the judicial system and the eventual triumph of justice.
