COLUMBUS, United States — Malik Chandler is an Ohio father facing felony charges after allegedly shooting a man accused of sexually assaulting his 11-year-old daughter.
The 31-year-old from Grove City has attracted widespread attention online. Many supporters have portrayed his actions as those of a father protecting his child, while prosecutors say he unlawfully took justice into his own hands.
Chandler has pleaded not guilty.
What Happened?
The case began after the girl’s mother reported an alleged sexual assault involving Diego Montoya Gonzalez, 20.
Prosecutors say Chandler subsequently used his daughter’s TikTok account to communicate with Gonzalez while posing as the child.
He allegedly persuaded Gonzalez to come to his Grove City home on July 16, 2026.
Chandler later told investigators that he intended to confront Gonzalez, beat him and detain him until police arrived.
He said the encounter changed when he believed Gonzalez was reaching for a gun.
Chandler then allegedly fired three times, striking Gonzalez twice.
Police found Gonzalez wounded at the property. He survived and was treated at Grant Medical Center in Columbus.
What Is Chandler Charged With?
Chandler was initially charged with felonious assault.
He was later indicted on felonious assault and a weapons-related charge.
At his August 5 arraignment, he pleaded not guilty and was placed on electronic monitoring.
Prosecutors also alleged during that hearing that Chandler had threatened a relative of Gonzalez outside court earlier in the week. Chandler denied making the threat.
His criminal case remains pending, and the shooting has not been ruled legally justified.
What Is Gonzalez Accused Of?
Gonzalez was arrested after the shooting and now faces serious charges of his own.
A Franklin County grand jury indicted him on two counts of rape, five counts involving sexually oriented material featuring minors and one count of obstructing official business.
He has pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutors allege investigators found several videos involving the sexual abuse of children on his phone.
The allegations against Gonzalez have not been proven in court.
Why Did the Bond Amounts Cause Outrage?
The case gained renewed national attention after social-media posts claimed Chandler had received a higher bond than the man accused of raping his daughter.
There was some basis for the initial comparison.
Chandler was originally held on a $100,000 bond after the shooting.
Gonzalez was later given a $50,000 cash bond and a separate $20,000 recognisance bond in his sexual-assault case.
But Chandler’s bond situation later changed.
At his August arraignment, a judge imposed a $10,000 recognisance bond and electronic monitoring as his case continued.
The differing figures therefore reflect proceedings held at different stages of the two cases rather than the current position of both defendants.
Still, the initial comparison fuelled an intense online debate about vigilantism, parental protection and whether the criminal justice system treats violent retaliation more severely than the alleged crime that provoked it.
For now, both men remain defendants in separate criminal cases.
Gonzalez must answer allegations that he sexually assaulted a child.
