OWERRI, Nigeria – Governor Hope Uzodimma has successfully emerged as the governorship candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State.

William Kayode, the Imo State Governorship Primary Election Committee chairman, made the announcement, declaring Uzodimma as the party’s flagbearer for the November 11 election.

The declaration came after the party’s primary election, which took place at the Ndubuisi Kanu Square in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, on Friday, April 14, 2023.

Governor Uzodimma secured 63,618 votes, with the party utilizing the direct primaries mode of election.

In his acceptance speech, Governor Uzodimma pledged to intensify his efforts to address insecurity and deliver good governance to the people of Imo State if re-elected.

He stated, “I promise to redouble my efforts in tackling insecurity and delivering good governance to the people of Imo State if re-elected.”

The governor expressed his commitment not to disappoint the people of the state during his potential second term and maintained optimism about securing victory in the November election.

He said, “I vow not to disappoint the people of the state if elected for a second term and express optimism about winning the November exercise.”

Tagged the “Supreme Court” governor, Uzodinma has battled for legitimacy ever since he took office in January 2020.

In a remarkable turn of events, Hope Uzodinma emerged as governor of Imo State through a Supreme Court ruling, ousting the duly elected People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Governor Emeka Ihedioha.

The court’s decision came after Uzodinma, a candidate from the All Progressives Congress (APC), contested the initial election results, citing irregularities.

The Supreme Court subsequently reviewed the case and, in a surprising judgment, declared Uzodinma, who came fourth, the rightful winner of the election, effectively replacing Ihedioha.

This unexpected development marked a significant shift in the political landscape of Imo State, with the APC taking over leadership from the PDP.

Ihedioha decided not to seek the ticket of the PDP for the election slated for November 2023.
