ABUJA, Nigeria — The Acting Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has initiated a major reform within the Nigerian Police Force by ordering the development of a comprehensive training program and curriculum for colleges and training schools.

The directive comes amid a national conversation about police professionalism and public trust.

In a statement released on Friday, June 30, 2023, by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, it was revealed that the new training program will place a greater emphasis on attitudinal and behavioral changes, as well as physical and technical fitness of the police personnel.

Egbetokun’s commitment to boosting the professionalism, efficacy, and public trust in law enforcement personnel underpins this directive.

According to CSP Adejobi, the IGP recognizes the multifaceted nature of law enforcement, which demands not only physical prowess and technical proficiency but also mental sharpness and the adherence to the highest ethical standards, empathy, and effective communication.

The statement outlined that the new training curriculum will be structured to address the importance of fostering a positive and community-oriented mindset among police personnel.

This will involve inculcating values such as integrity, effective communication, and respectful and compassionate interactions with the public.

The training will also seek to enhance the interpersonal skills of officers and provide them with knowledge in conflict resolution techniques, cultural sensitivity, and de-escalation strategies, which are pivotal to cultivating trust and cooperation between law enforcement and communities.

In addition, the program will encompass scenarios and simulations mirroring real-life situations, allowing officers to hone critical decision-making skills and evaluate the potential ramifications of their actions on community relations.

The IGP is dedicated to collaborating with experienced trainers, experts in relevant fields, and community stakeholders to develop this comprehensive training program.

He expressed his firm belief that this initiative will establish a stronger relationship between law enforcement and communities, while equipping police officers with the tools necessary to foster trust, understand diverse perspectives, and address issues affecting public safety and well-being proactively.

This development represents a significant step towards reforming the Nigerian Police Force, as it aims to not only improve the skills and capabilities of law enforcement personnel but also to restore the public’s faith in the institution.
