Reports from the on-going national convention of the main opposition party in Nigerian, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) indicate that the party has done away with the controversial zoning system.

The party has also dissolved its national working committee (NWC) of which Senator Ali Modu Sherrif was the chairman and also retained zoning for the presidential candidate which has been zoned to Northern states.

The PDP has set up a caretaker committee to steer the affairs of the party for the next 90 days. The committee is headed by former Kaduna governor, Senator Ahmed Makarfi while, Senator Ben Obi is the secretary.

Other members of the committee are Senator Ugbesia, Senator Abdul Ningi, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, Aisha Aliyu, and Barrister Usman.

The committee has been mandated to hold a national convention of the party where new members of the NWC will be elected within 90 days.

The national convention is holding in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State.
