A drunk driver had on Saturday, January 10, 2014 crushed three persons including a pregnant woman, a boy and his grandmother in an auto crash on their way back from a vigil at the Celestial Church of Christ on Unity Street in the area.
The accident took place at about 6 AM on the fateful day at the Oriyomi street in Ikeja, Lagos state’s capital when the driver of the Toyota Camry, who was returning from a nightclub, rammed into the victims at a junction in the area and smashed them against a transformer, according to a Punch report.
Unfortunately, the boy and his grandmother were confirmed dead on arrival at a private hospital in the area where they were rushed to.
On the other hand, the pregnant woman who was said to be the mother of the deceased boy had her leg broken and is currently receiving medical care at Adefemi Hospital in Ikeja .
A source, Sunday Etim who witnessed the tragedy disclosed that the driver of the vehicle escaped immediately after the accident.
Describing how the accident happened, Etim said, “The pregnant woman was pushed against the grandmother and her son. They were thereafter smashed against the transformer.
“The guys were about three inside the car, but they all fled except the owner. He has been handed over to the police. We learnt that the driver was drunk.”
Meanwhile, a cleric in the church who identified himself simply as Prophet Segun, said, “They were our members, but they were not in church that fateful day. Actually, they came to church on Thursday. The accident did not happen here so it has nothing to do with the name of the church. The husband did not come today (Sunday) and we do not have anything to say.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, while confirming the incident said, “The owner of the car has been arrested and he is helping us to track down the driver. The pregnant woman is alive and responding to treatment. It is unfortunate that the boy and his grandmother died.”
