The senior special assistant to delta state governor on political matters, Mr. Dennis Okoh and six others have been arrested for allegedly mobilising youths to invade a police station in Kwale, Ndokwa West Local Government Area of the state.
It was learnt that the attack on the police station was sequel to efforts by the youths to secure the release of a suspected electricity transformer vandal who was arrested by security operatives in the area.
Police public relations officer, DSP Celestina Kalu, who confirmed the incident on Monday, April 25, 2016, said that the suspect was arrested for vandalising a transformer undergoing construction within the community.
“Detectives from the Kwale Police Division had swiftly arrested the suspected vandal following a report lodged by a contractor at Umusadege-Kwale, that a transformer located in the area was vandalised, its gate house damaged and a 50-litre diesel stolen from there,” Kalu told to newsmen.
On the invasion of the police station, Kalu said that while leaving the scene, Okoh allegedly held back the police officers, mobilised youths against them, struck and injured one of them on the elbow and “dragged the rifle” of another.
According to Kalu, “The arrested suspect escaped in the process, but they said Dennis Okoh was arrested” and brought to the police station.
“Subsequently, about 50 youths mobilised to the station, damaged plastic chairs, louvres, threw stones and threatened to torch the station.”
The rampaging youths were dispersed with the assistance of other patrol teams, while those arrested have been transferred to the state command headquarters, the police PRO said.
