Ebola: Sierra Leone Cancels Christmas This Year

The authorities of Sierra Leone on Friday, December 12, 2014 revealed it’s plans to stop any public Christmas celebrations as part of measures to stop the continuous spread of the Ebola Virus Disease in the country.

According to AFP, soldiers are to be deployed throughout the festive period to force people venturing onto the streets back indoors, the government’s Ebola response unit said.

Tead of the response unit, Palo Conteh, revealed to journalists Freetown, Sierra Leone’s capital that there would be “no Christmas and New Year celebrations this year.”

“We will ensure that everybody remains at home to reflect on Ebola.

“Military personnel will be on the streets at Christmas and the New Year to stop any street celebrations,” he said, without saying which areas would be targeted,” Conteh said.

Over quarter of the population are made up of Christians although Islamic religion is more dominant in the country.
