Two female undergraduates wearing the Muslim veil locally known as Hijab escaped death by a hair’s breadth on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at the Federal University of Technology (FUT) Minna following suspicion that they were suicide bombers.
The duo were reportedly accused of being suicide bombers by a group of people at the Central mosque in Minna who raised alarm on sighting them dressed in their hijab and headed towards the school.
Sources who witnessed the incident said the girls were just trying to cross the frontage of the mosque when the Jumat prayers were about to be said when their dress modes immediately caught the attention of the people who subsequently raised an alarm.
The duo were lynched by a mob but soon rescued by the timely intervention of the police operatives in the area.
Reports revealed that one of the girls is reportedly receiving treatment from the police clinic in Minna after sustaining serious injuries.
Confirming the incident, the Niger State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ibrahim Gambari said, “When the attention of our men on duty was drawn to the ladies, they were subjected to bodily search and their bags also whisked and nothing incriminating were found on them.
“We were able to establish that the two of them are returning students of FUT Minna. Their mode of dressing made people to suspect them.
“It took the timely intervention of our men as members of the public had started to beat up one of the ladies leading to the point of sustaining some injuries and she is being treated at the Police Clinic,” Gambari state.
Meanwhile, the Niger State Police urged the general public to always avoid taking laws into their hands and report suspicious cases promptly to the police.
