Prepping for Battle: Nigeria Labour Congress Braces for Labour Challenges with New Government

ABUJA, Nigeria – Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has urged the incoming administration to brace for a litany of unresolved industrial disputes.

Speaking at a reception on Sunday, May 28, 2023, organised by his media colleagues, including the President of Nigeria Guild of Editors, NGE, Ajaero issued a call to action to secure a favourable working environment for Nigerian workers.

A former Vanguard Newspaper journalist, Ajaero assured past labour leaders and workers of his dedication to their cause.

“We will not disappoint past labour leaders, workers and Nigerians,” Ajaero pledged. “We have started the work we pledged to do and the state is fighting back. We will try our best to do the right thing as we go on.”

He continued, emphasising that labour action is not taken lightly, and hinted at a robust agenda for the incoming administration.

“Let me also say this now, the incoming administration will have a lot of labour challenges because there is no industrial issue that was concluded by the outgone government. So I pray the incoming administration gets the right people to address the impending labour issues so that we can harmoniously progress our country.”

Ajaero confirmed the NLC’s continued engagement with the government regarding the contentious issue of fuel subsidy removal.

“NLC still insists on an alternative before anything fuel subsidy removal takes place.

We will continue to engage the government but we will equally not allow further suffering of Nigerians in the name of fuel subsidy removal.”

At the gathering, former NLC president and current Senator-elect, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, urged the NLC’s current leadership to keep the labour movement’s fighting spirit alive.

He added, “Please keep the fighting spirit of our labour movement going. Deal with the big issues. When you are on the side of the people, you cannot fall.”

Oshiomhole further advocated for the political involvement of workers, citing the significant impact of politics on workers’ welfare.

He also pledged his support for the labour movement in the Senate, vowing not to support any anti-labour laws.

The gathering, marked by passion and determination, sent a clear message to the incoming government: the NLC is prepared to vigorously pursue its agenda and will accept nothing less than a fair deal for Nigerian workers.
