Senate Presidency: APC Candidates In Intense Lobby With PDP Senators

Must read

All Progress Congress candidates running for the position of Senate President in the forthcoming 8th Assembly, have shifted their campaigns to the Peoples Democratic Party Senators and senators-elect.

Senator Bukola Saraki (Kwara Central) and Ahmed Lawan (Yobe North) were initially scheduled to take part in a primary election organized by the party leadership before the arrangement was cancelled following the emergence of two major groups that pledged loyalty to both senators.

Other senators said to have been interested in the position Ali Ndume and George Akume have dropped their aspirations and pledged loyalty to Saraki and Lawan.

Reports revealed that a chieftain of the party and 24 senators-elect from the Norh-West and South-West had endorsed Lawan. Meanwhile, about 35 senators elect had adopted Saraki and communicated their intention to the party leadership.

It was gathered that according to some members of the APC, the 49 senators elect of the PDP may take advantage of the division in the APC and present a candidate to contest the senate presidency.

It was further gathered that the major contestants for the role have started making moves to secure the support of the PDP senators especially current senate president, David Mark.

A pro-Saraki group assured their colleagues in the opposition of legislative independence as that their would be no godfather to influence their actions and decisions of their candidate.

On the other hand, the Lawan camp called on the PDP senators to ignore Saraki because of his contribution to the down fall of their party and pay him back by supporting their candidate.
